With 37 keys and 128 user-rewritable programs, the Korg MicroKORG Synthesizer/Vocoder is perfect for the musician looking for a serious yet affordable synthesizer. It provides powerful synthesis with the same dual-oscillator DSP synthesis engine found in the MS2000, and offers a wider selection of waveforms than most other modeled synths. It also has an 8-band vocoder with many advanced features, a full range of effects, and a flexible arpeggiator. 2 audio inputs let you process other instruments through it. Also serves as a compact MIDI controller. Comes with its own microphone. Powerful synthesis The microKORG boasts the same dual-oscillator DSP synthesis engine found in Korg’s critically acclaimed MS2000 and offers a wider selection of waveforms than any other modeled synth. Oscillator 1 features a total of 71 waveforms. These include traditional analog waves like saw, pulse, sine and noise, plus more unique choices like Vox wave and cross wave. Together they provide a cool selection that can be modulated to produce an extensive range of timbres. In addition, 64 exclusive DWGS waveforms from Korg’s classic DW-8000 enable the microKORG to reproduce a broad collection of imitative sounds. Sounds like bells, electric pianos, guitars, basses and more that would be difficult reproduce on an analog synthesizer. You can also apply Ring and Sync modulation from Oscillator 2 to create the kind of complex timbres that are the true sign of an advanced synthesizer. Four filter modes are available, offering -12 dB (2-pole) low pass, high pass and band pass configurations plus an extra steep -24 dB (4-pole) low pass setting. All include resonance. Two classic ADSR envelope generators and two MIDI-syncable LFOs provide the power to shape your sounds.    The vocoder is extremely easy to use, but, the coolest thing about the microKORG is just how versatile it is. The sounds that come out of it range from Church Organs to Daft Punk. It’s also got MIDI capabilities as well. I use this for live shows and it brings the house down.

   I can’t believe how much power and potential is packed into this machine. Knowing that you can tweak and edit 128 individual sounds infinite ways (seriously, the combinations are only limited by what you stop at) was the biggest draw to this. I’ve heard of many professional acts who swear by the Microkorg, and it’s obvious why: you simply can’t beat what it offers in size, power, and price. Needless to say, I love mine!

   Pros: Great sound, MS2000 engine, software editable, runs on batteries, style and appearance, MIDI controller, ArpeggiatorCons: Horrible presets, microphone, mini-keys (?)I’ve owned this for years, and believe it’s the finest synth available in this price range. Unfortunately, the presets are lame, so you may not be aware of its real power just by testing it. It has the same sound engine as the larger/more expensive Korg MS2000, so you can download ALL MS2000 sounds to play on the MicroKorg. Visit Korg’s German website and download the software editor. That’s where the real power is. You can also use this as a MIDI controller, and it has MIDI IN/OUT/THRU ports, so you can control it from a larger keyboard if you prefer. I personally think the style is gorgeous, and I prefer the mini-keys (many people don’t). Keep in mind, the mini-keys don’t feel like piano keys. They feel “spongy”, instead. But it’s a synthesizer, not a piano. It gets decent enough time from a set of batteries, so I often take it and a laptop out into the sunshine to compose music. I’d recommend buying a case to protect the beautiful retro-styled body. The only “bad” thing about it is the silly microphone, which permanently gets twisted like a pipe-cleaner the first time you use it. It’s best to use a better microphone anyway. 4. Very Fun and Interesting Toy Around With

   Pros: Many options and variables to create a unique soundI’ve yet to own this product yet but I have used it in store and it caught my attention well. An employee showed me a few tricks and then I was off, on my way enjoying about 30 minutes just wandering through different sounds and experimenting. Looking forward to owning one soon.
